Whats the best way ( cost wise ) to travel from LA to san fransisco ( return trip )?

I am planning on a trip to the US, all the way from New zealand. Cousin lives in SF, hence trying to find the best way to get to SF and back to LA. La is where flights from auckland go to and from.
