Where is nice to cycle for recreation in Auckland?

My girlfriend and I are traveling the world but for the moment we are taking a few month in Auckland New Zealand. We want some inexpensive recreation so we thought we would hire some bikes and go for a bike ride next weekend. Is there anywhere in Auckland to rent bikes that is near a nice lake of something. Somewhere quite safe so we are not dodging traffic.
